Witness the kaleidoscope of colours of the vibrant marine life as you dive or snorkel into the underwater world of the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Belize was originally inhabited by Mayan civilisations as far back as 1200 BC, reaching its peak during 250–900 AD and leaving behind the wonderful ancient temples and ruins still seen today.
Today, Belize has a diverse population, which includes descendants of Mayan, African, European, and Garifuna peoples, as well as a growing Mestizo population. This cultural diversity is reflected in the country's languages, food, art and crafts, festivals and traditions.
With close proximity to the Caribbean Sea and the associated trade winds, Belize enjoys a warm and humid climate throughout the year, separating into two seasons – the wet and the dry.
Running between June and November, the wet season coincides with the Caribbean hurricane season, experiencing higher rainfall levels, especially later in the day and often in short, intense bursts. Daytime temperatures range from 27 to 31°C (81–88°F).
The dry season, from November to April, experiences a lower humidity level and less rainfall, with temperatures during the day reaching 24 to 30°C (75–86°F).
Hurricane season runs from June to November, although not every year experiences this weather system.
November to April, the dry season, is considered peak season with more pleasant humidity and less rain. It’s the ideal weather to enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore the reefs and visit the ancient temples. However, popular tourist spots will be busier and travel and accommodation prices higher during this period.
The wet and hurricane season in June to November brings fewer crowds and lower prices as well as lush landscapes perfect for birdwatching, jungle exploration and inland adventures.
The transition months of May and October offer an alternative, with fewer tourists and more stable weather conditions.
Exploring the country’s culinary scene provides an opportunity to experience the tastes of its heritage and history from Mayan, Caribbean, African, European and Mexican traditions. A staple of the Belizean diet is fry jacks. These deep-fried dough pieces are favoured at breakfast and are often filled with eggs, beans or cheese. For the more culinary daring, marine mollusc conch fritters are a must-try as a delicious appetiser. And to quench your thirst, try the popular vibrant red hibiscus tea, rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.
