Mexico offers an incredibly diverse range of attractions – there really is something for everyone. Here are 10 amazing things to experience in Mexico:
Explore the archaeological sites of ancient civilisations, such as the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Tulum and Palenque, and the Aztec ruins in Teotihuacan.
Explore the rich and diverse history and culture of Mexico, spanning thousands of years. Mexico was home to several ancient civilisations including the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec, which built major cities, created intricate artwork and made advances in fields such as agriculture, astronomy and mathematics.
The Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico in the early 16th century and defeated the Aztec Empire, marking the beginning of Spanish colonisation for nearly 300 years. Mexico later gained independence in 1810. The country experienced a major revolution between 1910 and 1920, leading to significant reform.
Mexico’s vibrant culture is influenced by these layers of history, with music, dance and festivals such as the famous Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).
Mexico is a vast country with varied topography, so its weather and climate vary across different regions. The regions along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea experience a tropical climate with year-round high temperatures and humidity, and more rainfall in the summer months due to tropical cyclones.
The regions in the north and central parts of the country such as the Baja California, Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert experience an arid and semi-arid climate with hot summers, mild winters and limited rainfall.
The Central Highlands and parts of the southern states have temperate climates with seasonal variations, cooler winters, warmer summers and a rainy season (typically May to October).
There are also variations in weather and climate brought about by elevation, with high-altitude places such as Mexico City experiencing a temperate climate and cool evenings, even in summer.
The best time to visit Mexico will depend on what you want to do and the places you’d like to explore.
For beach destinations like Cancún, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, high season runs from November to April, with dependable dry weather and warm temperatures. If you choose to visit in the low season, there will be a higher chance of rain, particularly during the hurricane season (June to November), but you may get better deals on hotels and attractions.
Mexico City and the Central Highlands have year-round mild temperatures (rarely exceeding 25°C (77°F). November to April is a good time to visit, when the chance of rainfall is low.
If you’re looking to explore the famous archaeological sites of the Yucatán Peninsula and enjoy the stunning beaches of the Riviera Maya, the dry season of November to April is an ideal time to visit, but this is also the busiest. If you choose to visit outside of this time, the chance of rainfall will be heavier, but the prices more reasonable.
For a visit to the Copper Canyon (Chihuahua), the best time to visit is spring or autumn when the weather is mild and pleasant, since summer is very hot and winter very cold.
Mexican food offers a taste sensation, which is why it’s such a popular cuisine around the world. When you visit Mexico don’t miss the opportunity to visit local restaurants and street food markets to sample some of the tantalising treats such as tacos, enchiladas, churros and so much more, and experience how they are cooked on their home soil.
