As Greece’s northernmost island in the Ionian archipelago, Corfu has a long and captivating history and culture. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and has influences from the Greeks, Romans, Byzantiums and Venetians. The island prospered under Venetian rule, which is visible today in the architectural legacy visible in Corfu’s beautiful Old Town.
Corfu’s cultural influences today are a blend of Greek, Italian and British, which is evident in its food, music and traditions. Corfu is a popular holiday destination due to its stunning beaches, emerald waters and beautiful landscapes. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its unique architecture.
Corfu’s Mediterranean climate offers mild winters and hot summers, making it an attractive destination for travellers throughout much of the year.
Spring temperatures range from 15 to 25°C (59–77°F), so it’s a great time of year to explore Corfu’s lush greenery and take in its floral blooms, but remember to pack a jacket for the evening.
Summers (June to August) are hot and dry with temperatures averaging between 25 and 35°C (77–95°F) so this is the ideal time of year (and most popular!) to enjoy Corfu’s amazing beaches.
Autumn (September to November) is still a pleasant time of year to enjoy the island. While the temperatures start cooling in October the sea remains warm, so it can still be possible to take a dip in October.
Rainfall is more frequent during the winter months (December to February), however the temperature remains mild in comparison to other parts of Europe and rarely drops below 10°C (50°F).
June through to August is peak season in Corfu, due to its reliably hot and long days of sunshine, so if bustling beaches and vibrant nightlife is what you’re looking for, then this is a great time to visit.
If you’re looking to make the most of Corfu’s gorgeous climate with fewer crowds, then May and early autumn are the best times to visit. While October remains mild, it will be significantly quieter than the earlier months in the year.
Wander through the streets of Corfu’s charming Old Town, admire the Venetian architecture and historic landmarks, and shop and dine to your heart’s content.
Corfu’s cuisine is blend of Greek, Italian and Venetian influences, making it unique and flavourful. While you’ll find all the Greek staples such as souvlaki and moussaka, for a taste of something more distinctively Corfiot, try the traditional pastisada (beef or chicken in tomato-based sauce and spices), sofrito (thinly sliced beef or veal in a white wine and garlic sauce), or bourdeto (a spicy fish stew). And don’t forget to try the famous kumquat liqueur, a local Corfiot delicacy!
