Jamaica’s unique mix of vibrant energy, laid-back lifestyle, captivating history and spectacular scenery produces a diverse offering of activities for anyone visiting the island. Here are the top 10 things to do on holiday there:
Climb the cascading falls and refresh in the waters of Dunn’s River Falls, truly one of the island’s most romantic and idyllic spots.
Jamaica has a rich history of cultural achievements, resilience, and contributions to the world, including culinary delights, sporting excellence, and music and dance.
Jamaica is known for its Reggae music, made popular by artists such as Bob Marley. The mid-20th century saw the growth of tourism across the island as visitors from around the world were enticed to this tropical island to soak up the natural beauty, exquisite beaches and cultural heritage.
Jamaica has a tropical climate, which means warm temperatures all year with distinctive wet and dry seasons. The wet season runs from May to November, with increased rainfall and higher humidity. Rain showers during this time are usually short and intermittent, and often occur in the afternoon or evening. Temperatures during the wet season are typically 26 to 30°C (79–86°F). The dry season runs from December to April, with low humidity and minimal rainfall. Daytime temperatures are usually 24 to 30°C (75–86°F). As Jamaica is in the Atlantic hurricane belt, hurricanes may occur during the months of June to November.
The inland regions of Jamaica, including the Blue Mountains, can be cooler than the coast, with night-time temperatures dropping to 15 to 20°C (59–68°F). The Caribbean Sea surrounding Jamaica remains at a balmy 24 to 28°C (75–82°F) throughout the year.
Peak tourist season is generally from December to mid-April during the dry season. With lower humidity and minimal rainfall, it is ideal for island exploration, beach activities and outdoor adventures. However, accommodation and flight prices will be at a premium and popular tourist spots more crowded.
You may prefer mid-April to June and September to November as there is only occasional rainfall, a quieter atmosphere and more affordable travel and accommodation rates.
If you would like to plan your trip to coincide with cultural events and festivals, there is the Reggae Sumfest in July and the Jamaica Food and Drink Festival in October.
Explore the delectable dishes on offer seasoned with authentic Jamaican spices and flavours. A must-try is Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and saltfish, a local breakfast favourite with all the trimmings including fried dumplings, callaloo, green bananas, avocado and plantains.
For a sweet treat indulge on sweet potato pudding, which is cooked beneath hot coals. Locals refer to these puddings as ‘Hell a top, Hell a bottom, and Hallelujah in de middle!’, so it’s got to be good!
Also try the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, which carries notes of chocolate, floral hints and a subtle sweetness.
