Spain is located on the Iberian peninsula and enjoys a Mediterranean climate in most regions. However, due to its geographic spread and diversity, there are also areas that have Atlantic, continental and even desert climates.

Generally, the country benefits from sunny weather, with most regions of Spain seeing over 2,500 hours, or 104 days, of sunshine every year. It's always good to check the specific weather patterns for your chosen region, but here's a seasonal breakdown to help you plan your visit:

Summer (June to August)

Weather: Summers are hot, especially in southern Spain, where temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F). Coastal regions like Costa Brava and Costa del Sol offer a cooler, breezy escape, while northern areas like Galicia enjoy more moderate weather.
Best For: Beach holidays, coastal road trips, and attending famous festivals like La Tomatina and the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.

Spring (March to May)

Weather: Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), making spring one of the most comfortable seasons to visit. Nature comes alive with blooming flowers and green landscapes.
Best For: Sightseeing in cities like Barcelona and Madrid, exploring countryside vineyards in La Rioja, or attending cultural events like Seville's Feria de Abril (April Fair).

Autumn (September to November)

Weather: Temperatures range from 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F), with pleasant warmth lingering into early autumn. It’s a quieter time as the summer crowds fade.
Best For: Visiting cultural landmarks, wine tasting during the grape harvest season, and enjoying local festivals like La Mercè in Barcelona.

Winter (December to February)

Weather: In the southern regions like Andalusia and along the Mediterranean coast, winters are mild, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 17°C (50°F to 63°F). In contrast, central and northern Spain can be much cooler, with occasional snowfall in areas like Madrid and the Pyrenees.
Best For: Skiing in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, exploring cities like Seville or Granada without the crowds, and enjoying festive Christmas markets and events.

Enjoy the communal experience of a true tapas experience. Savour the flavours of the traditional Valencian paella, and treat your taste buds with locally caught fish, in particular Spanish delicacies such as grilled octopus and marinated anchovies. Taste the cured meats Spain is famous for, in particular the jamón ibérico and jamón serrano. Pair these with a local cheese such as manchego. Wash it all down with a glass of Spain’s spectacular rioja wine.
