Antalya, on the southwestern coast of Turkey, is renowned for its stunning coastlines and beautiful sandy beaches, but also its rich history dating back to ancient times. It was once part of the ancient region of Pamphylia and later became a Roman city known as Attaleia.
During the Roman and Byzantine periods, Antalya prospered as an important port city and trade centre. Later it came under the rule of the Seljuk Turks and then became part of the Ottoman Empire.
There are many sites that can be visited to witness these periods of history, such as the Old Town (Kaleiçi), Hadrian’s Gate and the Antalya Museum. The cultural heritage of the area has been shaped by this diverse history, and this is reflected in customs and festivals celebrating local traditions.
Antalya has a Mediterranean climate, so the summers are very hot and dry with very little rainfall during this time. Daytime temperatures in summer can often exceed 30°C (95°F), so it’s a fantastic time to soak up the sun and partake in all the summer activities the area has to offer. But this is, of course, also the most popular time to visit.
Spring in Antalya is pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 25°C (59–77°F), and this is a lovely time to witness the region’s blossoming flowers and lush, green landscapes. Autumn brings similar temperatures to spring, gradually cooling after the heat of the high summer, but this makes it a good time to explore and do outdoor activities.
Winter brings much cooler weather, with daytime temperatures dipping to 15 to 20°C (59–68°F) during the day and 5 to 10°C (41–50°F) at night. It’s also the rainy season, so pack an umbrella and warmer clothes if you plan to visit at this time of year.
If you enjoy the buzz of the summer peak season, you’ll be guaranteed lots of sunshine to relax on the beach or enjoy water-based activities. Spring and autumn both bring pleasant weather, so if you’re looking to escape the crowds or explore the outdoors, bag a cheap holiday, or a last-minute break, this can be a fantastic time of year to visit.
Your taste buds are in for a treat when you visit Antalya, with all the Turkish staples available. Try a healthy option such as piyaz, a traditional Turkish salad and kisir, a tasty bulgur wheat salad. Don’t forget to sample a few mezes and kebabs too. And for something sweet be sure to try some of the vast array of baklava and Turkish delight. As a popular tourist destination, Dalaman caters for a wide range of international tastes.
