Florida’s diversity of cultural influences comes from its long and varied history. Today, Florida’s culture is a wonderfully vibrant mix of ethnicities including Cuban, Puerto Rican, Haitian, and other Caribbean and Latin American communities. These influences are evident in Florida’s cuisine, music and festivals.
Florida enjoys a subtropical climate, making it an attractive holiday destination all year round. Summers in Florida are hot and humid with temperatures often reaching 32°C (90°F), though you are likely to see the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Winters are much milder with temperatures of around 18–24°C (64–75°F), so ideal for those who want to escape the cold.
Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures and lower humidity, making them ideal seasons for outdoor activities and exploring Florida’s diverse natural attractions. Florida does have a hurricane season to be wary of – it runs from June to November, though the peak period for hurricanes is from late August to early October.
As with any holiday, when to visit depends on what you want from your holiday, what climate you enjoy and what you want to do.
With its milder temperatures, winter is peak tourist season for Florida with tourists looking for some winter sun. As a result, it can be quite crowded in the popular resorts, so it’s worth planning your visit well in advance.
Spring is a wonderful time to visit Florida. With warmer temperatures but without the humidity and risk of thunderstorms and hurricanes, it’s a great time of year to explore the diversity of Florida. But it’s a popular Spring Break destination so from mid-March to early April it can get very busy.
If you’re looking for a quieter time to visit Florida, then travel in autumn. Temperatures are still mild, but there are fewer crowds and as you go into October the risk of hurricanes subsides significantly.
With Florida having such an extensive coastline, seafood is a particular delicacy, so you can indulge in a wide array of delights from succulent stone crab claws and spiny lobster tail meat to fresh grouper and Key West pink shrimp. There are other local delicacies that Florida is famous for, such as alligator meat!
Other than seafood you’ll experience a wide variety of cuisines influenced by the different cultures of Florida’s people, including Cuban dishes like Ropa Vieja, Caribbean jerk chicken and Puerto Rican mofongo. You can then wash all this down with a slice of Florida’s most famous dessert: the key lime pie.
