Northern Cyprus shares much of its history with Cyprus, with multiple civilisations fighting for control of the island including the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and later the Crusaders and Venetians before being conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

In contrast, summer rarely sees any rain, and temperatures soar above 30°C (86°F), sometimes reaching beyond 35°C (95°F) and even higher in July and August.
Autumn sees mild temperatures of 20–28°C (68–82°F) but as the season progresses the chance of rainfall increases. Temperatures continue to decrease as winter sets in (10–18°C/50–64°F) and rainfall is most common in this season, however compared to other Mediterranean countries, rainfall is not too heavy.
